Mead batch 1
Asset Tag: https://u.staceyell.com/s0.rQrvjXvfcMvHG
Materials & Notes
First try, using included materials with mead making kit.
- 1 gallon carboy
- D-47 yeast
- Added to must directly as directed by kit, contrary to technical information from the yeast vendor. Perhaps this is okay since our must is entirely liquid.
- shook into the must to get it off the walls, we should be more careful next time and allow it to sit on the foam?
- Brita filtered tap-water
- 1Kg BeeMaid pasteurized honey, unmeasured - trusted bottle.
Retrospective summary
- More carefully add yeast, perhaps with a secondary dry-material funnel.
- Air-lock must be filled with sanitization fluid or a strong liquor, not water.
Day 1 - 2023-11-19
- 22C at the start
- airlock puked
Day 2 - 2023-11-20
- Yeast looks lively, some darker brown mass on foam, we can fill below the 1gallon line next time - it's not a problem during primary fermentation.
- Degassed and fed, looking quite healthy and with no darker brown mass. Sprayed on ceiling as warned...
- Tasted the foam, tasted like slightly strange honey.
- Refilled air-lock with sanitizer.
Day 5 - 2023-11-21
- Feeding day.
- Degassing was easier, no eruptions of any sort
- Placed in closet for continued primary fermentation & bulk aging.
Day 5 - 2023-11-27
- Clarifying slowly, not much gas anymore
Day 23 - 2023-12-12
- Bottling day.
- Produced bottles: 7
- immediately broke the first bottle, no label.
